As an expat, it is only natural to get worried about certain things concerning your living in Mexico. Among these concerns are related to health and the quality of living from a hygienic point of view. Oftentimes, people worry about safety and the nearest beach, when in fact, they do not even wonder about the quality of water and healthcare is.
Fortunately, the health care system here in Mexico is pluralistic in nature, which means that there are both private and public health institutions in this country. That does not mean that you should go entirely with private institutions, however, because this country can still boast to have a public health care system that is at par with its richer neighbors.
The larger cities in Mexico have at least one top-notch hospital, so you won't go wrong with living any of the major cities. A big boost for Mexico is that its health care system is relatively more affordable than that in the United States. This means that you can get your teeth checked or your body operated in another country at only around half of the cost. An increasing number of Americans actually troop down to Mexico in order to get their teeth checked and even get some minor operations. Medicine here is relatively affordable as well.
You cannot go wrong with the quality of health practitioners here because most of them have received some training in the US, while a lot of US practitioners also received some form of training here in Mexico. You can visit a doctor and have a consultation session for only around $25, while a visit to the dentist can cost you about $20.
As for water, most locals drink tap water, though we still advise you to purchase your own mineral water instead, just to be sure.
