Michelangelo had once claimed, modestly, that his only function would be to free the statue that had been imprisoned in every block of marble. A remarkable concept, indeed.

The craftsmen of Ocotlan, Oaxaca, have somewhat similar views, while using the natural contours of ordinary scraps of wood and creating animals, inclusing reptiles and birds, and in a fantastic array of shapes, as well as colors.

Not made from single blocks are these, but the legs, the tails, the ears and the horns are separately shaped, then attached.
